Fort Montgomery, NY Fort Montgomery State Historic Site, located just north of the Bear Mountain Bridge, commemorates the October 6, 1777 battle in which 2,100 British, Loyalist and Hessian troops captured Forts Montgomery and Clinton after hours of fierce fighting. The Visitor Center, with its exhibit gallery and 15 minute movie, tells the story of this dramatic fight. Self-guided interpretive trails lead visitors past the remains of earthworks and building foundations. The past is brought to life through living history demonstrations and programs, including the annual battle commemoration on Twin Forts Day. A suspension footbridge across the Popolopen Creek, located where a pontoon bridge originally linked the two forts, connects the site to the Trailside Museums and Zoo, where Fort Clinton's outer redoubt is preserved. |
