In 1967, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation transferred Bristol Beach to PIPC. This former brickyard in the town of Saugerties, 12 miles north of Kingston, became a 53-acre park.

Bristol Beach and the adjacent parcels were coveted for the commercial value of their location: between U.S. Route 9W, one of the region's main north-south highways, and the west bank of the Hudson River, and with access to both. In keeping with renewed efforts to protect the waterfront from inappropriate development, PIPC expanded the park in the 1990s. With the cooperation of the former owner of the original parcel, Bristol Beach more than tripled in size to 165 acres. It remains undeveloped.
