Rockland Lake State Park contains four swimming pools, a championship golf course, a par three executive golf course, a popular bike path, four pools, six tennis courts, nature center, a cartop boat launch, and, of course, Rockland Lake, which is home to many species of fish, including largemouth and smallmouth bass. Birdwatchers enjoy the varied species of raptors, water birds, and songbirds. The Park hosts many special events and fundraisers for local charities.

Rockland Lake is also the site of one of the first industries in Rockland County. Ice harvesting was a major industry until the invention of refrigeration. Ruins and relics of the physical plant and the supporting community are still visible. A Program Center at the north end of the park documents the history of the ice industry, quarry industry, and the tourist industry.

The south pool will open May 24, 2008 and will continue to be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays for the season. Daily swimming begins June 23, when the pool also will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. The north pool is closed for renovations.

The lake-side Rockland Lake Nature Center will open for the season June 4, 2008.

Rockland Lake Nature Center

A visit to the 4-acre Rockland Lake Nature Center offers a glimpse into the area's past — from an open meadow with tree seedlings gaining a toehold among the native grasses, to a bog trail surrounded by dark, dense undergrowth and providing a scenic view of the lake.

The two trails that capture the essence of the field-and-forest habitat reopened to the public yesterday, even as work continued on new exhibits in the center that will interpret the area's past Lenape Indian presence and 19th-century ice industry.

Visitors to the site welcomed the news that Bear Mountain's Trailside Museums and Wildlife Center is turning the Rockland Lake facility into a center for environmental education facility.
Rockland Lake State Park Nature Center is open from 10:00 to 4:00 Saturday, Sunday, Mopnday, and Tuesday. If you are a group leader and these days are not convenient, please call (845) 268-2503.

The Nature Center features displays about the Ice Industry, Native Americans, the local Davies family, the beginnings of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, and the Wildlife of the area. Guided tours of the Nature Trails are available at no charge.

The Center will close for the season Columbus Day Weekend and re-open June 2, 2007.
