We're not out of the winter woods yet. But by now, we've all had enough of being cooped up inside. Still — going out doesn't have to break the bank. Here, Hudson Valley Metromix has found 10 things to do — all under $20. So put on your scarf and hat, break out your Andrew Jackson and head out into the cold. Soon enough it will be nice out again, and you'll have plenty to do around the house that doesn't involve the television.
Bear Mountain is great for those with school-aged kids and toddlers, and it's prime stroller territory, too, with a flat paved path around Hessian Lake, an ice rink, indoor carousel, and best of all, The Bear Mountain Trailside Museum and Zoo. The museum is small (so it is manageable). The zoo, while also small, is enough to keep kids happy. It's a bit of a walk from the parking lot, so dress appropriately on a cold day. Admission to the zoo and trailside museums is free for all ages- recommended one dollar donation per person.
Even if you're renting skates, a day at the rink is pretty cheap. Skating at the ice rink is $4 per adult, $3 per child aged 5-12, with $1 more after 6 p.m. Children aged 4 or under are free. Skate rentals are $4 per pair. Parking is $7. To verify times, conditions before heading out, call the park office at 845-786-2701 or visit www.bearmountainicerink.com.
